Tighes Hill NSW 2297

Why Tighes Hill?

One of Newcastle’s original suburbs, Tighes Hill has thrown off its old ‘miners cottage’ image and gentrified into a trendy inner west location right on the fringe of the city. This very small suburb is bordered to the south by the meandering Throsby Creek and magnificent green space of Islington Park. Narrow streets, small cottages and terrace houses pay homage to its 19th century origins, while newer developments cater for the growing demand from young residents looking for a relaxed lifestyle close to town. Maitland Rd borders the residential sector of Tighes Hill, providing easy road access to the CBD, harbour and beaches a few minutes to the east, while the Industrial Highway along the eastern edge provides a fast route to Port Stephens and Newcastle Airport.

Demographics

A significant proportion of the population is under 40 years old, reflecting the influx of young people working in the CBD. 85% of dwellings are free standing houses with some terraces/townhouses and very few apartments. Around one third of residents are tenants, and rental demand is high. Weekly income is above the average for the city, reflecting the inner west status and popularity with young professionals.

Health, Education and Schooling

The large Newcastle campus of TAFE NSW occupies a significant area of land on the western side of Tighes Hill, offering a comprehensive range of courses covering a broad variety of industries and vocations. There is a small local public school, which is one of the feeder schools for Newcastle High School.
