Waratah is a very large suburb to the north west of the Newcastle CBD. It is a very central location due to proximity to employment hubs, contains a number of primary and secondary schools and is serviced by 3 arterial roads providing easy access to the north, west and south of the city. It contains a large shopping centre, The Waratah Village, and the large open area of Braye Park. The McDonald Jones Stadium and Newcastle Showgrounds are very close.

There are over 1000 free standing dwellings in Waratah, and 700 apartments or townhouses. The suburb is popular with tenants due to the central location, with almost 50% of dwellings being rented.
