Chermside QLD 4032

Why Chermside?

Chermside is a major northside Brisbane suburb around 10km from the CBD, known for its extensive shopping, healthcare, public transport and recreational facilities. The suburb has a more urban feel than many surrounding residential suburbs, with a mix of post-war houses, renovated homes, townhouses and a growing number of apartment developments.

The suburb’s housing profile has changed significantly over time, particularly around the commercial centre. Detached homes remain throughout the residential streets, while apartments and medium-density housing are more common around major roads and shopping areas.

Westfield Chermside is the suburb’s major commercial destination, with more than 400 stores across retail, dining, entertainment and services. Chermside is also home to The Prince Charles Hospital and has extensive public transport connections, making it an important employment and services hub for Brisbane’s northern suburbs.

Demographics

Chermside had a population of 11,426 at the 2021 Census, with a median age of 35 and an average household size of 1.9 people. The suburb has a relatively high proportion of smaller households, reflecting its significant apartment and townhouse market alongside established houses.

The median weekly household income was $1,419 in 2021, while households had an average of 1.2 motor vehicles. The suburb also has a significant rental population, particularly within its apartment and medium-density housing.

Cafes & Dining

Chermside has one of Brisbane’s largest suburban retail and dining precincts, centred around Westfield Chermside and the surrounding Gympie Road corridor.

  • Westfield Chermside – a major shopping and entertainment destination with more than 400 stores, including retail, cafes, restaurants, cinemas and entertainment venues.
  • Westfield Chermside dining precinct – includes a broad range of cafes, restaurants, fast food and casual dining options, with both indoor and outdoor areas.

  • Hamilton Road – provides additional cafes, restaurants and everyday food options around the commercial centre.
  • Chermside Aquatic Centre precinct – adds further food and recreational options around the suburb’s major sporting and leisure facilities.

The scale of Westfield Chermside means residents have access to a much broader range of dining and entertainment options than is typical for a suburban shopping centre.

Parks & Recreation

Chermside has an extensive network of parks, sporting facilities and green spaces, with the Kedron Brook and Downfall Creek corridors providing important recreational connections.

  • 7th Brigade Park – a significant park on Hamilton Road with open space, recreational facilities and connections to the surrounding bikeway network. Brisbane City Council is undertaking upgrades to improve informal sport, off-road cycling and spaces for community use.
  • Marchant Park – a large recreational area in nearby Chermside West with sporting fields, playgrounds, picnic facilities and access to the Downfall Creek corridor.
  • Downfall Creek Bikeway – provides walking and cycling connections through Chermside and surrounding northern suburbs.

  • Kedron Brook – the creek corridor provides access to walking and cycling routes and connects Chermside with Wavell Heights, Kedron and other northern suburbs.
  • 7th Brigade Park playgrounds and open spaces – provide areas for children, families and informal recreation close to the commercial centre.

Chermside’s parks and recreational facilities provide a useful balance to the suburb’s busy commercial centre, with extensive green space and walking and cycling routes nearby.

Transport

Transport is one of Chermside’s major advantages, with extensive bus services, major roads and access to Brisbane’s northern transport network.
