Kalinga QLD 4030

Why Kalinga?

Kalinga is a small, established northside Brisbane suburb around 8km from the CBD, known for its leafy streets, renovated Queenslanders, family homes and access to Kalinga Park and Kedron Brook. The suburb was formally gazetted as a separate suburb in 2015 after previously forming part of Wooloowin.

The suburb is predominantly residential, with detached homes making up most of the housing stock. Many properties have been renovated or rebuilt, while traditional Queenslanders and character homes remain an important part of the streetscape. Kalinga is also one of Brisbane’s smaller suburbs, giving it a distinct neighbourhood feel.

Kalinga Park and the Kedron Brook corridor are central to the local lifestyle, with walking and cycling paths, playgrounds and open space. The suburb is also close to Clayfield, Wooloowin, Nundah and Chermside, providing access to a wider range of shopping, dining, schools and transport options.

Demographics

Kalinga had a population of 2,144 at the 2021 Census, with a median age of 39 and an average household size of 3.0 people. The suburb has a strong family presence and a high proportion of detached housing.

The median weekly household income was $3,697 in 2021, while households had an average of 1.9 motor vehicles.

Cafes & Dining

Kalinga has a small local dining scene, with most cafes and restaurants located in neighbouring Clayfield, Wooloowin and Nundah.

  • Racecourse Road – nearby Ascot and Hamilton provide a larger dining and shopping precinct with cafes, restaurants and bars.
  • Westfield Chermside – provides a much broader range of restaurants, cafes and entertainment within a short drive.

Kalinga’s local appeal is more closely tied to its residential setting and access to green space than a large dining precinct, with plenty of options available in the surrounding suburbs.

Parks & Recreation

Kalinga Park and the Kedron Brook corridor are central to the suburb’s recreational appeal.

  • Kalinga Park – a large park with playgrounds, picnic facilities, open lawns, sporting areas and walking and cycling paths.
  • Kedron Brook – the creek corridor provides a major green connection through Kalinga, Wooloowin, Wavell Heights and Nundah.
  • Kedron Brook Bikeway – provides a shared pathway network for walking and cycling through Brisbane’s northern suburbs.
  • Kalinga dog park – an enclosed off-leash area within the broader Kalinga Park precinct.
  • Shaw Park – nearby Wooloowin provides sporting facilities and open space for organised and recreational activities.

The extensive parkland and bikeway network gives Kalinga a strong connection to outdoor recreation, with much of the suburb’s open space linked to the broader Kedron Brook corridor.

Kalinga has convenient access to both rail and bus services, with nearby stations providing direct connections into Brisbane’s CBD and surrounding suburbs.
